Ghana is one of the most unique countries on the African continent. The ancient history of this land shows the world a huge number of unique cultures and peoples. The Ghana Empire flourished here in the Middle Ages. The medieval kingdom of Mali helped one of Africa’s most colorful ethnic groups, the Ashanti, foster a culture that can now be studied by tourists. The modern Republic of Ghana was formed from the former British colonies of the Gold Coast and Togoland and became the first country in the region to gain its independence in 1957. The colonial history has left the strongest imprint on modern Ghana.
Ghana is an African “castle country”. The two coastal forts, Britain’s Fort Usher and Denmark’s Christianborg Fort, were the place where Ghana’s capital, Accra, was founded. To this day, these historic neighborhoods have been preserved. Near the center of the capital, one will find Makola Market, the best place to buy batik and glass art products made by local artisans.
Jamestown is a small peninsula located in the southwest of the capital. It is an area of picturesque ruins of the past, which is adjacent to the settlements of the city’s poorest residents. Independence Square in Accra is considered by many to be a copy of Red Square in Moscow. It is a very picturesque place of regular ceremonial military parades.
The Accra Arts Center is located between Independence Square and the city centre. It hosts a permanent museum and exhibition, where the products of local craftsmen are sold. The Arts Center is also a good venue for regular song festivals, dance performances, and theater groups. It is located near one of the few fully fledged dance clubs in Africa, Nkrumah Circle. From the south of the capital, it is bordered by beautiful beaches, some of which correspond to world standards: Coco Beach, Nungu and others.
To the north of the capital is the interesting Aburi Botanical Garden, which opened in 1890. To the west of the capital is Kokrobet, site of a unique African institution, the African Academy of Music and Arts with its many schools of vocal and dance skills, exhibition halls and art studios. There is also a beautiful hotel, restaurant and well-groomed beach area. The number of exhibitions, concerts and festivals held here is huge.
Along the coast are up to 15 old European forts. Hundreds of fishing villages give you an insight into the local lore. One of the most visited villages is Senja Pirako. It is populated by very friendly people and has a wonderful beach, the cleanest beach in the area, a kind of mecca for surfers. Apamea, another small fishing village, is famous for its Al-Sabr fortress, which was rebuilt as a hotel.
Cape Coast, the main town in the region, is famous for Cape Coast Castle and a few nearby castles. Some of the local Dutch castles were literally brought from Holland and rebuilt in Ghana. Very popular with tourists, Kakuma National Park was created to protect the coastal populations of antelopes, monkeys, elephants and more than 200 species of birds.
Kumasi is the ancient capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, which still maintains a reputation as one of West Africa’s leading cultural centers. The local National Cultural Center is a charming museum of the history of the Ashanti people with a library and shopping centre. In Kumasi, you can also visit an original zoo, so well organized that in fact it is an exact copy of a piece of local nature, overgrown with plants and more like a botanical garden. Be sure to visit the many colorful celebrations and festivals that the people of this country admired.
